Thomas Adam Joyce, a 1981 graduate of Amesbury High School, truly enjoyed and valued his experiences in school and throughout life. He was the editor of his yearbook, a member of the National Honor Society, the math team, and the baseball team. Tom could be found supporting the “Red and White” every chance he got, whether watching games or working the chains during the varsity football season. The relationships that he cultivated from the halls, classrooms, and athletic fields at AHS extended throughout his life.
Tom lived most of his life in Amesbury, having been born and raised there by his loving parents Edward and Geraldine Joyce. His sister Ronnie worked with him at Joyce Dance Studios and was close to him throughout their lives. Tom taught dance classes since high school and has influenced hundreds and hundreds of students over those years, not only with dance, but with a commitment to life. He loved his students, and they loved him.
Tom and his wife Michelle raised their son Adam and daughter Lauren and saw them graduate from AHS themselves. Like him, they were actively involved in school and are deeply committed to family. Tom’s legacy will live on through the kindness and commitment of his children.
Tom was an avid golfer and was a perennial member at the Amesbury Country Club where he loved both playing golf and talking as much as possible with the guys. He adored his family, was supportive of his friends, and was committed to his community. He was connected to many in Amesbury and was loved by so many.
A brother, son, teacher, and friend of Amesbury, Tom was first and foremost a man of character and commitment. Anyone who knew him experienced this firsthand. He truly cared about people and treated them thoughtfully and respectfully. Collectively, these important qualities defined him and deserve to be exemplified, recognized, and cultivated with our youth of today.
The Thomas A. Joyce Memorial Scholarship has been organized and funded by Tom’s family and friends to annually recognize and support an Amesbury High School graduate who, through their actions, exemplifies the character, commitment, and respect of others he demonstrated every day of his life.
