AEFI is pleased to announce that the following individuals will be inducted into the AEFI Hall of Honor on Friday, April 28th, 2017 at our 15th annual Hall of Honor Banquet and Awards Ceremony. Join us in congratulating:
Peter Hoyt: Former Educator
Peter B. Hoyt retired as Principal of Cashman School but also devoted half of his career in Amesbury as a fourth grade teacher at Amesbury Elementary School and Cashman School as well as Assistant Principal of Amesbury Middle School. His students and colleagues remember him best for his Woodsom Walks and tours of local historic treasures as a way to instill pride in Amesbury. Respect, Responsibility, and Reflection were the lessons Hoyt instilled as principal. After his retirement, Hoyt served on the AEFI Board of Directors before his election to the Amesbury School Committee where he continues to strive for the best for Amesbury Public Schools.
Graham McKay: Student, AHS Class of 1997
Graham McKay, Class or 1997, is the legendary pitcher who led the AHS Varsity Baseball Team to the State Championship that year, and who went on to play baseball and graduate from Harvard University. Combining his education with his love of sailing, boat building, history, and underwater archaeology, Graham returned to Amesbury to become the master craftsman and Executive Director of Lowell’s Boat Shop, Amesbury’s National Historic Landmark and active working museum. Graham has developed educational programs to guarantee the future of Lowell’s, including boat building classes, high school Apprenticeships, in-depth workshops with AMS Grade 7, and Math on the River at AHS. He has been featured in such publications as Yankee Magazine and Coastal Living, as well as a PBS special Craft in America and Chronicle.
Joan Miller: Friend of Education
Joan Miller has devoted herself to AEFI for 15 years, playing a vital role in reorganizing the Board’s mission and helping to develop programs such as Hall of Honor. Beginning as a volunteer at Cashman School when her boys started school, Joan volunteered for every School Council or committee as they grew, and continued after they graduated. She has used her position at AEFI to become an ambassador for Amesbury Public Schools, whether as a representative for AEFI to Amesbury teachers, or to the outside world by appealing to prospective parents, espousing the benefits of a public education and the merit of the Amesbury School System.
