AEFI Accomplishments 2007
Each year brings us new challenges, and new reasons to be proud of our contributions to public education in Amesbury. Here is a brief summary of the highlights of AEFI in action over the 2007 school year.
Among this year’s AEFI grant recipients was the Visual Image Projection project at Amesbury Middle School. This image was created by 8th grade student Eli Segal.• At our second annual Wine & Beer Tasting held on September 15, 2007, awarded a $10,000 grant to Amesbury Middle School teacher John Lyman for his “Transforming Earth Systems Science Education Institute Program” (TESSE).
• Honored Russ Munroe, AHS Audio-Visual Coordinator, with a Peter Gray “Friend of Education” recognition.
• At our fifth Annual Hall of Honor ceremonies recognized three individuals: Brian Lees, Former Student, AHS Class of 1971, former MA Senate Minority Leader; Leo Dupere, Former Educator at AMS; and George French, Friend of Education.
• Awarded a total of $15,000 in grants to teachers for the following innovative programs:
Boston College Seismology Project (teacher Gale Regis, Amesbury Middle School) - $2,149 grant.
Enhancing Instruction Assessment & Learning in Mathematics (teachers Karen Iworsky and Beth Cavalier, Cashman Elementary School) - $3,652 grant.
Jump Start (teacher Margaret Welch, Amesbury Elementary School) - $500 grant.
Historical Perspectives Through the Arts (teachers Maggie Furlong and
Tom Horan, Amesbury High School) - $3,700 grant.
Visual Image Projection (teachers Ann Bartkiewicz and Ken Parkinson, Amesbury Middle School) - $1,500 grant.
Poster Outreach Project (teachers Leslie Barnaby and Peg Laufer, Cashman Elementary School) - $2,500 grant.
Basic Aid Training for Grade 5 (teachers Laura Mirandi & Catherine Hill, Amesbury Middle School) - $375 grant.
• Awarded AEFI College Head Start Scholarships totalling $2,500 to eight AHS students: Meghann Tassinari, Kristin Marrs, Kelly Hughes, Mollie Sydlowski, Troy White, Veronica Snyder, and Melanie D’Andrea.
• Awarded two $500 math scholarships, one $500 Ron Ryan scholarship award, and two $1000 Kevin Cassidy scholarships.
• Recognized 46 Amesbury Public School staff members through A+ Awards.
• Welcomed new members to our board: Lane Glenn, Ph.D., VP of Academic Affairs at Northern Essex Community College; Meryl Goldsmith, Morning Host of 98.7/The Bay radio station in Dover, NH; Ann Connolly King, former Amesbury Municipal Councllor; and Deb Comick, former Amesbury School Committee member.
• And last but not least, established our new website, AEFIonline.com.
